I was raised to believe that I could be who and what I wanted to be
But the moment I stepped out into this world I was faced with inequality
I was raised to believe that the color of my skin and the shape of my body are perfection
But every day society tries to change my perception
They give me a photoshopped image and they tell me this is beauty, this is perfection
No, this is deception
This can’t be beauty if it ain’t even real
How is it that every time you get a dark-skinned model you have to lighten her up?
Or if she has freckles you have to airbrush them off
This is a letter to You society
Something is wrong with you because you are not seeing true beauty
Beauty is my caramel skin
Beauty is my wild untamable curly hair
Beauty are my long curly lashes
Beauty are the bags and wrinkles under my eyes
Beauty are my chubby cheeks
If you haven’t realized it by now society
I don’t care about who you want me to be
I’m not being mean
I’m just being me
I’m just living unapologetically
I’m understanding that when God made me he made me unique
He said “here is Amaris world I have made her in my own image”
“She will have a quirky laugh”
“She will have crazy hair”
“She will have a heart that cares”
“90% of the time she’ll be the loudest person in the room”
“Her ears will be big, and she will think she’s funny”
“I have made her after myself, I made her in my own image, so she could reflect me”
“She is perfectly imperfect.”
I just want to tell you that you were beautifully and wonderfully made
When God looks at you all he sees is his masterpiece
So please understand you’re a big deal
Don’t let the lies tell you otherwise
You’re worth more than silver, and gold
You’re beauty shines brighter than a diamond
I may come off as crazy, truth is I kinda am
But every time I look at myself
I understand the masterpiece that I am
I look at myself through my creator’s eyes
And say Man you did it right
Because of this I live unapologetically
I’ll apologize for hurting someone
I’ll apologize for doing wrong
But I can never apologize for being me
I’ll never apologize for the way God created me
For it is perfect in its own way
Hi, my name is Amaris, and I’m unapologetically me.
